Name:Emilio
From:Miami, FL
Date of Surgery: February 1998

“It started with sharp stomach pain that lasted throughout the day. The pain had a definite impact on my life. I was not able to sleep well or participate in any physical activity. I knew something was wrong and that I needed to see a doctor.”

After suffering through severe stomach pain for several days, Emilo could no longer take it, and his wife rushed him to the hospital. Following a week of medical tests, Emilo was diagnosed with diverticular disease. The surgeon explained his options, which ranged from surgery to remove a portion of his colon, to beginning a strict diet to lessen the symptoms and pain. Emilo decided to go on a high-fiber diet to improve his health.

“I tried to change my eating habits and really improve my health after I learned I had diverticular disease. I did not want to experience more pain.”

However, despite sticking to the diet for seven months, he had another attack. This led Emilo to pursue a surgical approach to address his disease. Emilo’s next decision was whether he wanted his colon removed via a minimally invasive colon surgery performed laparoscopically or through a more traditional open surgery. Emilo had been fortunate to work for a colon and rectal surgeon at Mercy Hospital in Miami, where he learned the benefits of minimally invasive colon surgery, including less pain and faster return to normal activity, so, for him, the decision was easy. He decided to have his colon removed laparoscopically.

The next day, Emilo was able to walk around the hospital. Two days after the procedure, Emilo was feeling well enough to go home. Within seven days, Emilo went back to work.

“After having the procedure seven years ago, I have found ways to improve my health. I have been playing golf and softball to keep physically active and have continued to eat healthier. I am very thankful I have not had any recurrences from my diverticular disease.”

The results in this story are those of one patient and are not indicative of all outcomes. Individual patient results may vary.  As with any surgery, there are operative and long-term complications and risks that should be discussed with your doctor.  Possible risks include, but are not limited to, bleeding, complications due to anesthesia and medications, deep vein thrombosis, dehiscence, infections, leaks from staple line breakdown, marginal ulcers, pulmonary problems, spleen injury, and stenosis. Please note that if surgery is performed laparoscopically and complications occur during the operation, your doctor may choose to perform open surgery. Consult your physician for a description of specific risks involved with colon surgery and to see if laparoscopic colon surgery is right for you.
